Celebrating Octoberfest in your home can be a wonderful way to invite guests over. Socializing with friends and family can help you live longer, promote good mental health, and better physical health. Well, what better way to do it than eat fall foods and drink beer.
The First Octoberfest
Since October of 1810, the city of Munich has celebrated what is now the biggest festival in the world: Oktoberfest! It started with the royal wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen and has grown over the years to encompass music, horse racing, games and rides. Today, over 6 million visitors from across the globe converge in the great domed tents of Theresienwiese to eat, drink and be merry.
Traditionally, Octoberfest starts in late September and goes for 16-18 days. I’m not sure you would need to be that drastic for a home party but to each his own. I’ve known German weddings to be 2-3 days in my hometown of Torrington, WY and the Nebraska Panhandle.
What type food and drink to prepare
Since Colorado is known for it’s breweries, there are many growler choices for sampling. The Blood Orange Griffin beer at Grimm Brothers in Loveland, CO is a good German style beer to try. In addition, you might consider Celtic Cask Ales at McClellan’s Brewing Co in Fort Collins CO. This Scottish beer is all about the malt. Another fun idea would be to ask your guest to bring a growler of beer. Make it a tasting party.
Food choices can be as easy as pretzels and different types of mustard. If you prefer a meal, try Schnitzel with mushroom sauce and Bavarian coleslaw. Whatever your choice for food it is sure to please your guests. Here are some amazing recipes that are sure to please.
